An unusual antique sterling silver trowel with a presentation inscription.  The blade edge has a pierced lacework border and the bone handle is also decorated.  Such presentation trowels were traditionally given to commemorate the laying of the foundation stone of a building.  It should bear an inscription with the name of the dignitary presenting the trowel, the dignitary laying the stone, the building and the date of commencement (or completion) of the project. This sterling silver commemorative trowel’s inscription reads: “Presented by the architect W. Clement Williams F.R.I.B.A  To Alexander Sroll Esq. on his laying the foundation stone on new business premises Halifax For A. Scott Ltd. May 11th 1903.”  This building is believed to be the current York Buildings on Commercial Street aka Permanent Buildings in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
