The King’s German Legion was a British Army unit of mostly expatriated German personnel during the period 1803–1816. The legion achieved the distinction of being the only German force to fight without interruption against the French during the Napoleonic Wars and served with high distinction and professionalism in battle.
The King’s German Legion’s motto: Nec Aspera Terrent in Latin means in the literal sense they are not afraid of difficulties. In a less literal manner it translates to: Difficulties be damned. This motto is currently in use by the British Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment and the US Army’s 27th Infantry Regiment.
