George Armstrong Custer (December 5, 1839 – June 25, 1876) was a United States Army officer and cavalry commander in the American Civil War and the American Indian Wars. It is in these American Indian Wars that Lieutenant Colonel Custer was killed in the Battle of Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876. Custer was killed while leading the 7th Cavalry Regiment in Montana Territory against a coalition of Native American tribes (Lakota, Dakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho). He died of two gun shot wounds along with all of the five companies he led, about 700 soldiers, including his brother and nephew, fighting until the last man against thousands of Native American warriors. This battle also became known as “Custer’s Last Stand”.
